Back in Chicago

Thanks for coming back! Have you subscribed to the feed yet? Do so by Clicking here. ----------------------------------------------

Well my second trip to Chicago in the past 5 months has been successful so far. Lots of Deep Dish Pizza, cold weather, and the Simply Youth Ministry Conference. It’s been fun hanging out with some of the guys on our staff team and learning some cool things. Here are a couple cool resources I want to share:

The first is a book by Les Christie called “Awaken Your Creativity.” I went to a seminar taught by this guy and really liked it. He’s very experienced in youth ministry (over 40 years) but still very young at heart and has fun with everything. He talked about how when we were younger (Kindergarten, for instance) we were willing and believed we could do anything. Now that we’re older, however, we say no to so many things because we are afraid of failing or because we’ve been told not to for no good reason. Being bold and willing to think outside of the box and being OK with failure will lead to much more open creativity. Apparently Edison tried 9,000 different filaments before he found one that works for the lightbulb.
You can see it on Amazon here: Awaken Your Creativity.

The second is a really cool and helpful video about lighting in video. You can do it for less than $100 and it looks very professional. Helpful for understanding the 3 points of lighting. Check it out here: DIY Lighting

Anyway, it’s been pretty fun so far. If anyone else has some cool resources about this stuff, holler!

My Life as a 6 year Old

Here is a video of myself as a 6 year old. It’s fairly embarrassing. Not so much because of the way I acted when I was 6, but because of how little has changed. The good news is, I have proof of my love for the Hawks that has been around for much longer than most who have jumped on the bandwagon this year. Not that I have anything against that bandwagon, because the Hawks deserve one.
There is a pretty good chance you will just find this annoying, but you may just get a laugh.

Does anyone have any hilarious family memories they would like to share?

Goals for 2010 Blog

Even though it is February, I have just decided on some goals for my blog for this year. Sure, it’s a little late for New Year’s Resolutions, but I don’t care. I do what I want. My half birthday was last Tuesday if you need an occasion for re-evaluations.

Anyway, here they are…

1) To make 200 posts.

2) To have 50 subscribers. Right now there are 5, and I love them. If you would like to subscribe, click that funny looking orange button in the top right corner. Or click here.

3) To have 400 comments that are not spam. This means I need at least 2 comments per blog post. On average of course.
no-spam

4) To be mentioned in Tyler Stanton’s Blog. He’s hilarious (and the reason I am making this post).

5) To create a video that has 50,000 views on youtube. My current best is The Beak-up with just under 7,000 (may be over 7,000 by the time you read this). I made it 2 years ago and the quality is terrible, but it seems to be sort of popular.

6) To make people laugh and think more than last year.

If you have any suggestions for how I can improve, please comment!

Winter Olympics

The Winter Olympics are upon us. A time where world class athletes fly down mountains at speeds of 90 mph, jump 50 feet into the sky to perform tricks, and use a broom to sweep the ice in front of a granite stone as it moves towards a circle. While curling may be the most unathleticly challenging sport in history, it is still fun to make fun of.

What’s crazy about the Olympics is how people devout their entire lives to training for one event, an event that may not last longer than 10 seconds. Some athletes, such as the hockey players, get a little more playing time, but most Olympic events do not last longer than a day. They go through months and years of training, eating well, painful falls, and mental determination all for one day.

Vancouver Olympics Snowboarding Shaun White is the most exciting part of the Olympics to me. And I know he has taken a painful fall or two.Or two million.

I laugh every time an announcer talks about how an Olympic athlete has “really fought and worked hard to get here.” Well, duh, I don’t think anyone in the world could just waltz up to an Olympic event and be able to compete in the Olympics, even if the said event is Curling.

curling I know, you may need a break from reading this blog because of the intensity of this picture of Curling

The apostle Paul, a Gold Medalist when it comes to bringing the Kingdom, had this to say in 1 Corinthians 9:
“24Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize.

25Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. 26Therefore I do not run like a man running aimlessly; I do not fight like a man beating the air. 27No, I beat my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.”

Interestingly, Corinth was the home of the bi-annual Isthmian Games. This, behind the Olympics in Athens, was the second biggest athletic competition of the Ancient World. Paul knew the Corinthians would be able to relate to the way athletes train for competition, and as modern Americans we can relate just as well.

We tend to think that everything should have a quick fix. A microwave can fix our food in less than a minute, we can google search anything we need to know in 2 seconds, and cliff notes gets countless college students through school every year. Unfortunately, the things that really matter in life don’t usually have a quick fix. There is no magic pill to repair a marriage, there is no machine or buttons you can press to commune with God, and getting in shape cannot happen over night.

Olympians train so hard and work for years for an event that will only last a few minutes. How much more, than, should we work on our relationship with God, which will last an eternity! How much more should we pursue the souls of other people, so that they can join with us in eternal celebration. This deep relationship with God does not happen overnight. There are times when the training and the falls can get so hard you want to quit, but remember the prize you are pursuing and fighting for will be worth so much more than the pain you may be experiencing now.

Seek after God. Seek after Him with persistence, seek after Him with determination, and seek after Him with all your Heart. If you do, your reward will be far greater than a gold medal.

Hilarious News Story of the Week #1

So there was a really funny event yesterday in the news and it makes me want to blog about funny news stories every week. We’ll see if it happens.
Yesterday, a zebra escaped from the Circus and ran loose on 85 in downtown Atlanta. Fortunately, Atlanta does not have bad traffic so it wasn’t an issue. Oh, wait, Atlanta has some of the worst traffic in the world.
This are the two best videos I could find. You can see the traffic in the second video:

Could this spawn a sequel to Racing Stripes? Let’s hope not.

A Valentine’s Story

True Romance is rare in this world, and this video captures it like never before. I think this is one of the highest quality and funniest videos we have yet made. Hope you enjoy it!

Snow Day!

Morgan and I celebrated the snow today by making a monster snowman. It was pretty fun. She even threw a snowball at me while filming. Check out the footage here:

Scrubby Valentine’s Day Moves

So, just in time for Valentine’s Day I have a few things a scrubby boyfriend may do on Valentine’s Day. Ladies, if your boyfriend does something like this, it’s time to dump him like he’s hot.

1) Takes you on a “romantic” date to see The Wolfman.

2) Buys you a video game, such as Medal of Honor, you can play “together.”

3) Takes you to McDonald’s for dinner. Since it is a special occasion, he lets you supersize the meal.

4) Gives you the teddy bear his ex-girlfriend gave him two years before.

5) Gives you a box of chocolates. With chocolates missing.

6) Tells you to dress up nice for your big date, and shows up in a t-shirt tuxedo. (Actually, if he does this, you should marry him right away).

The TNVA’s

The TNVA’s are almost upon us. If you’ve never heard of them, you will. Like, right now. It is the culmination of a massive video contest we are hosting. TNVA stands for True North Video Awards. I am pretty excited because we have a lot of teams signed up to make videos. Some of them may even make it to this blog (clearly, my recent posting frequency is an indicator of my need for new material). But I am making a public announcement that my posts will be more frequent! I mean, Lost is back which gives me plenty to blog about. While I think about the future of this page, here is a funny video we made to advertise the TNVA’s.

Stories

Ahh yes. A return to blogland after a long vacation from Christmas and New Year…

I really love stories. If you have ever spent more than an hour with me, you probably know that my favorite story is The Lord of the Rings. Even though I do not always want to believe that The Lord of the Rings is make-believe, I know it really is fiction. But, even though stories like The Lord of the Rings are fictional, truth can still be found in them. In fact, I believe that the truth in stories can resonate with us in a way that no other method of communication can do.
sam-frodo-frontdoor

A good story engages us and opens us up. Through them, we are able to experience the emotions, both good and bad, of any character. Have you ever watched a movie and imagined yourself as one of the characters? Perhaps the movie frightened you or gave you a sense of joy at great victory. I love it when I am at the movie theatre and people start cheering and clapping because they are so into what is going on. Obviously, the director, actors, or anyone involved in the movie cannot hear them. But it does not matter, we place ourselves inside a good story and it changes us because of that.

A great example of how a story can change us is the climax of The Lord of the Rings. If I wanted to communicate the importance of carrying each other’s burdens, I could simply say, “Hey, you guys should carry each other’s burdens.”

Not very effective, right?

But, if we read or watch the following scene in The Lord of the Rings, carrying each other’s burdens takes on a whole new meaning. You Can watch the scene here, but come back!

When we see the hopelessness of Frodo and the courage and sacrifice of Sam the idea of carrying each other’s burdens takes on a whole new meaning that was unreachable before. Great stories can do this, and they have been doing it for thousands of years.

I think that is why 1/3 of Jesus’ teaching is parables. He knew the value of stories. He knew they simplified complicated truth and made it tangible for people. Her knew they could touch us on a heart level and cause us to change. Just like Sam, the Good Samaritan (a Samaritan of all people!) gives us a whole new understanding of what it means to be a neighbor.

So if you read stories or the parables, don’t just brush them off as entertainment. There is depth and meaning there that can change everything in our lives.
